LangIsland is built on mutual respect and a shared love of language learning. All members are expected to communicate with courtesy and kindness at all times. Harassment, bullying, hate speech, and discrimination of any kind — including based on race, nationality, gender, religion, age, or language level — are strictly prohibited. Personal attacks, insults, or intimidating behavior will not be tolerated. Members who witness inappropriate conduct are encouraged to use the in-platform reporting tools. Repeated or serious violations may result in account suspension or permanent removal from the community.
To ensure a productive and enjoyable experience for all participants, please follow these session guidelines: • Punctuality: Join sessions on time. Arriving more than 5 minutes late disrupts the group and is discouraged. • Camera: Using your camera is strongly encouraged. It creates a more personal and engaging environment for language practice. • Recording: Do not record any session — audio or video — without explicit consent from all participants. Unauthorized recording is a serious violation and may result in account suspension. • Language: Communicate in the designated session language as much as possible. Brief use of other languages for clarification is acceptable. • Focus: Avoid multitasking or leaving sessions unattended. If you must leave, notify the host and exit the session properly.
Points are LangIsland's way of measuring and rewarding active participation in the language learning community. How you earn points: • Attending a session as a participant: +5 pts • Attending a session as an assistant host: +7.5 pts • Hosting a session: +10 pts • Uploading a session recording: +1 pt (host only) • Profile completion bonuses are awarded once per field How points are deducted: • No-show as participant: −10 pts • No-show as assistant host: −12.5 pts • No-show as host: −15 pts • Late cancellation (within 1 hour of start): −5 pts • Monthly inactivity fee if below your target Monthly target: Each member has a monthly points target (default 40 pts). Members who fall short may incur an inactivity fee at the end of the billing cycle. Account locks: • Point Lock (Status 6): Triggered when your points balance goes negative after the monthly deduction. Unlock fee: NT$160 base + (absolute value of negative points × NT$10). • Host Lock (Status 8): Triggered when a Normal member (Islander) hosts fewer than 2 sessions in a calendar month. Unlock fee: NT$160 flat — no point top-up required. Newbie members are exempt during their first full month after evaluation approval. Points have no monetary value and cannot be exchanged or transferred. The system is designed to encourage consistent participation and accountability.
New members (Newbies) go through an evaluation period before gaining full access to all session types. What to expect as a Newbie: • You will be matched with a Newbie Session hosted by a Core Host for evaluation • The session is a normal language exchange — just focus on communicating naturally • A Core Host will assess your English level and participation after the session Evaluation criteria: • Active participation during the session • English communication ability (approximate level assessment) • Respectful and cooperative attitude After your evaluation: • If approved, your status is upgraded to Normal and you gain access to all session types • If more practice is recommended, you may be asked to attend another Newbie session • Evaluation results are confidential and intended to be helpful, not judgmental If you have questions about your evaluation status, please contact support.
Session hosts play a vital role in creating a positive and productive language learning environment. As a host, you agree to: • Prepare in advance: Arrive on time, have a topic or discussion material ready, and set up the session link before participants join. • Welcome all participants: Greet members warmly, especially newcomers. Make everyone feel included regardless of their language level. • Facilitate discussion: Guide the conversation, ensure everyone has a chance to speak, and keep the session on track. Manage time appropriately. • Maintain order: If a participant is being disruptive or violating community standards, politely address the issue. Use the reporting tools if necessary. • Report issues: If a serious incident occurs during your session, report it through the platform immediately. Do not attempt to resolve major conflicts alone. • Cancel responsibly: If you must cancel a session, do so as early as possible so participants can plan accordingly. Frequent unexplained cancellations may affect your host privileges. • Minimum hosting requirement: Normal members (Islander) must host at least 2 sessions per month. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a Host Lock (separate from Point Lock). Newbie members are exempt during their first full month after evaluation approval.
